Day 15: Olga – A Legend of Viking Age Rus
Welcome to Day 15 of the "Saga of the Seasons: 24 Days with Viking Legends," where we explore the captivating story of Olga, a formidable figure in the Viking Age Rus. Our Olga dress, inspired by the archaeological find from Gnezdovo grave C-301, beautifully captures the essence of Slavic influences and historical authenticity.
The Remarkable Story of Olga
Olga of Kiev, also known as Saint Olga, was a trailblazer in the history of the Kievan Rus. Born around 890 AD, she became the regent of the Kievan Rus after the assassination of her husband, Igor of Kiev. Her reign was marked by a series of strategic and often ruthless actions to consolidate power and avenge her husband's death, earning her a legendary status in the chronicles of Eastern Europe.
One of her most famous acts was the clever and calculated revenge against the Drevlians, the tribe responsible for Igor's death. Olga's cunning strategies and diplomatic acumen not only secured her position but also laid the groundwork for the future stability and expansion of the Kievan Rus.
Olga's conversion to Christianity was a pivotal moment in her life and the history of her people. Baptized in Constantinople, she became a key figure in the Christianization of the Kievan Rus, influencing her grandson, Vladimir the Great, to adopt Christianity as the state religion. Her legacy as a wise and visionary leader is celebrated in both historical texts and religious traditions.
The Unique Olga Dress
The Olga dress is a testament to the rich cultural tapestry of the Viking Age Rus, featuring characteristic Slavic influences. The design is based on the textile find from Gnezdovo grave C-301, showcasing a unique blend of historical accuracy and artistic flair.
Crafted from coarser natural linen, the top of the dress features a pleated neckline, reflecting the intricate craftsmanship of the era. The skirt, partially pleated on the sides, is dyed a striking blue, adding a touch of elegance and color that was prized in Slavic fashion. This combination of textures and hues creates a garment that is both authentic and visually captivating.
