Historical Legacy
Haithabu (Hedeby) was a major Viking Age trading center from the 8th to 11th centuries. The harbor excavations produced exceptional textile evidence—fragments with preserved stitch holes, seam allowances, and construction details we can measure and replicate.
FREYDIS is based on Fragment H14A (30 cm × 16-23 cm), one of the most complete apron dress fragments ever found. Along with Fragment H14B and grave finds 159/1960 and 182-185/1960, these pieces show us three-panel construction, loop placement, and strap attachment methods.
The brown-dyed wool fragments from Haithabu's harbor show careful finishing techniques—backstitch spacing, running stitch measurements, edge treatments. This isn't guesswork. This is what survived in the ground.
